To Nancy, and the family of Lai Hing Tam,
I wish to express my condolences at the passing of your dear Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, friend. I would like to say that I didn't know her but upon reading her Heartsong I am awed at the strength, love and resilience she displayed all her life. What a treasure she was to you and while you will miss her physical presence I feel that she will always live on in your hearts. She is now on the other side and I can envision her watching over you all and cheering loudly as I am sure that she now has a voice that if you stop and listen you may hear her. I feel that the veil to the other side is so very thin and she is not far away. Nancy shared with me that she liked a little Christmas Tree that I drew for Nancy on a card. When I heard that it gave me goose bumps. I have read in a book a quote that said " the souls true purpose in this life is to love and create. I believe that she lived her life like that. Also years ago my husband delivered Chinese food and remembers being in the kitchen of the Lorne Avenue Chop Suey restaurant. He remembers a lady working away at what he thought looked like crepes. Nancy believes that this was her Mom. We are all connected somehow. May you find solace in the love and creativity she showered down on you. Her star will shine brightly as you continue her legacy of love. May she watch over you and bring you love as you work through the grief that is so raw at this time. As s the pain eases and the memories flow may they wrap around you like a big loving hug.

For Edna, Kay and Wei aunt Lai was not just our aunt, she was like mom to us. For the Ngo girls, they had an extra grandma from their great aunt Lai.
These are some of our most fondest memories of our Aunt Lai. Grandma and my mom talked about her often. It would be about how she was good at knitting, sewing or how much she enjoyed her garden. And that whatever she enjoyed it was always the best in the house. My most fond memory of her would be when I was around the age of 15. It was her first visit to our house in Calgary. On her arrival she proceed to check out each and every room in the house. She picked my room and to this day I am so honored, because whatever she picked it is always very best. And from that day on, whenever she visited, she stayed in my room. Some visits where short and some lasted for months. No matter how long or short the visits were, we never wanted her to leave.
Carmen's she favorite memory of her great aunt Lai, was when Lai and her grandma did their ginger feet soak. It was great to see grandma and great aunt Lai enjoying a spa like treatment at home. Seeing how great aunt Lai laughed with grandma was just so very special. And the best part was when great Aunt Lai took the sack of ginger and placed it on her tummy and say ahhhh.
Karen's favorite memory of her great aunt Lai is how she knows our family so well. When we visited her in her seniors home she made dinner for us. Karen remembers Nancy tell us the story of Lai cooking so little rice. Nancy had ask many times, " are you sure that is enough rice?" Aunt Lai, is like yes that is more than enough. Karen's says that people who know us well, know that we don't eat much rice.
Lauren's favorite memory of great aunt Lai is how Lai and grandma would sit and communicate in Chinese. Aunt Lai would write the Chinese characters when even grandma didn't understand. Aunt Lai was just amazing even with her disability she still manage to learn to write in Chinese.
When you visited us in Calgary, your 2 week stays would end up as 2 months. The trip we all remember so well was the one where your 2 weeks, ended up as more than 6 months. We loved that you stayed with us for so long. We love and miss you aunt Lai.

We always loved seeing Popo at Faye & Jonah's place in La Ronge. She would always have a project on the go, and in nice weather we'd be out on their sunny warm deck. If she were in Saskatoon and we were with Faye and Jonah, we'd join her for lunch via the iPad. She was interested in what we were having and vice-versa. There was always lots of communication in spite of her deafness. What a beautiful, strong, courageous woman!
One of my favourite visual memories is of the two gorgeous beaming 90-year-old mothers walking Faye and Jonah down the aisle.
Condolences to her family and many friends. She will be missed and fondly remembered.
-Trudy and James in La Ronge
