Mr. Dahlgren was my piano teacher for 2 years, between 1979-1981. I recently got back to playing after buying an incredibly capable Yamaha Clavinova and think of him a lot while I practice. He taught me how to use the body physics and the Liszt technique. Now that I am much older and wiser with infinitely better listening abilities, practicing is a joy.
I will miss him dearly.
My condolensces to all his family and friends.

This note is probably for Greg Schulte, but family members might be interested also.
It has been about 50 years since I last spoke to Doug. People move on in time and space. I graduated from the music faculty at McGill University in Montreal in 1976 and went on to get a Teaching degree. His obit came as quite a shock; I found it accidentally while looking for another name in Thunder Bay.
I studied with Doug only for about a year in Grade 13 of high school. It wasn't long, but probably unbeknown to him--he greatly affected me. To this day, I can still picture him going to his extensive record collection and playing something that was new and different. He had a fabulous knowledge of all genres of music and he went out of his way to play things that moved the mind forward. It is directly because of him and these 'listening sessions' that I learned to play the Alban Berg Piano Sonata, Op.1 (Forte-Piano-Piannissimo), Hindemith Piano Sonata No.3 in mi bemol mineur, and the Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 31, in A Flat Major, Op. 110. I will always be grateful to him for his enthusiasm in all things musical.
If you, Greg, wish to call me, I can be reached at the above email (best) or tel. 9-0-sol-8-fah-1-si-me-lah-fah.

I first met Doug when I came to Port Arthur in 1967 to be the music director at St. Paul's United Church, and enjoyed his friendship as a colleague as long as he lived here. We should all be grateful for the wonderful legacy he and Rene left us in the now Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. I was privileged to coach Doug's students when he was away on sabbatical, and to serve as his page turner on a number of occasions when he accompanied other musicians. I also fondly remember his lavish dinner parties. But I will always remember Doug for introducing me to leeks, when at the grocery store he told me with a twinkle that he was going to the produce department to "take a leek". Rest in Peace, Doug, as you join the music of the spheres. My condolences to Doug's family and many friends.

I remember Douglas well as the organist at St. Michael’s. An awesome musician and a gentle and kind man. I remember once hearing him play Greg’s Steinway at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The moment is etched in my memory - his playing was so peaceful, dynamic and beautiful. Yet, it was not a concert - he was just warming up as people were busying about preparing for a rehearsal. A true maestro and virtuoso. I feel privileged to have been privy to that moment and to so many more with his wonderful music. My condolences to his friends and family.

My sympathy to Douglas' family and friends. I knew him as organist at St. Michael's, Quebec, and had the privelege of being in the choir at that time. I remember his patience and diligence and unfailing kindness. Rest in Peace, Douglas.

I just wanted to add my condolences to the family and friends of Doug Dahlgren. I’m a present day musician with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, and although our paths never crossed I certainly heard the story of how the orchestra started and have always felt indebted to him for the job I have today. As I read the remembrances of him from his students, friends and colleagues, I realize he had much more profound impact on Thunder Bay as a teacher and member of the arts community. We’ll not forget him at the TBSO and will be thinking of him as we start into our 60th season.

For many years, Douglas was a senior ballet accompanist at L'EDQ in Quebec City, where I was director and also taught ballet. His piano accompaniment was so artistically inspiring, for us teachers and for the students! We missed him when he left the city, and I miss him still. Sincere condolences to all family and friends. Please know that he was loved here! RIP Douglas. xoxo

Doug changed my life. I have had two Great teachers in my life, and he was one.
I first heard Doug and Greg at Westley United Church in Thunder Bay in concert playing the Liebeslieder Waltz’s by Brahms and solo works by both pianists. I finally heard music played as it should be. I began lessons with him in 1976 and he moved to Montreal soon after. I followed Doug and his family to Montreal and studied with him for 6 years.
We became fast friends, and he introduced me to Culture! What an experience. One small story – on the first night that I arrived in Montreal, I went to Doug and Lisa’s (where I would stay for a few months) and spaghetti dinner was in the making. I did know how to cook, BUT – I was told that I had to peel the mushrooms! No washing them, as they would be too moist. And thus began another learning experience – how to cook!
He loved to cook, reading many cookbooks and always trying new recipes.
He was a marvelous teacher, wonderful cook, and a great friend. He is greatly missed.
My condolences to Krista, Lisa, Greg and the children.

I remember Uncle Doug as a fun, sweet man who cooked for us and played hide and seek with us when we visited him a long time ago in Montreal. I removed that he hid with me by taking the "fire exit" sign and putting it on the door that we hid behind. I thought he was a genius for that, and I remember having such a fun time with him on that trip.

Doug was a remarkable man. I met him in the mid-1970s. The meeting was unrelated to music. My brother and I had spotted a car stored in a garage in a back alley and traced down the owner. It happened to belong to Earl Stafford and the garage belonged to Doug Dahlgren and Greg Schulte. We learned that they had moved across town (in Thunder Bay) to an apartment above an old service station and we drove over to ask about the car. We were invited in and immediately were drawn into a wide ranging discussion about art (I was making art at the time), music, food, wine, philosophy, religion and I don't know what else. We ended up being invited to dinner, and so a great friendship began.
Doug and Greg's post-concert parties were famous and the guests were among the city's most interesting people. And I was introduced to classical music which inevitably led to my recent post as executive director of the TBSO, thanks in no small part to Doug and Greg's influence. I also met the Mosers, Ned, Judy, Lisa and Maggie, who would continue to be important people in Doug's life.
Doug and I lost track of each other over the years. He moved to Montreal and I moved into a career and now decades have flown by. In my last season with the TBSO I began planning for the Symphony's 60th anniversary, and part of my plan was to have Doug present for one of the concerts to celebrate his role as founder and performer. Sadly, due to Doug's passing and COVID-19 that is not to be. All that is left are memories. Memories like lying under Doug and Greg's 9-foot Baldwin grand piano in the dark listening to him practice Debussy's L'isle Joyeuse and many many more.
My sincere condolences to Krista, Greg, Lisa, Maggie and all of Doug's relatives and friends who will miss all he brought into their lives. It was an honour, pleasure and a gift to know him. –Gerald McEachern

Doug became my piano teacher in Port Arthur in the early 60's. He changed my life profoundly by inspiring and preparing me for a life in music. He was a uniquely gifted musician and teacher. The world is a sadder place without him in it. Sincere condolences to Krista and family and to Greg.
